As a teenager, he worked as a caddy at the Forest Dale golf course in Salt Lake, and later at the Saltair resort as a game booth boy.
He met Chrystal Lavetta Reed while coming home on the train from the Saltair one day. They were married by an an Episcopalian Bishop on June 28, 1922, at Chrystal's mother's home. They had two children. Their daughter, Tess, died at the age of 16 early Christmas morning in 1942.
After Chrystal died in 1961, Clifford married Madelyn Mary Cooper on December 4, 1962.
Clifford later died on December 13, 1991, at the age of eighty-eight.
