This John Burnett was born in Hannover Co. Virginia. He married Elizabeth Tate around 1775. John bought land in Hannover Co. in 1788 and in 1789 his occupation was recorded as being a 'Hatter", or one that makes, sells, cleans or repairs hats.

Between June 1, 1781 and late 1827 and even after, John Burnett and his wife Elizabeth are recorded numerous times in tax records, probate records, will books, land deed records, petitions and witnesses to many deeds in both Hannover Co. and Patrick Co. Virginia. He had owned 4866 acres of land while selling 2312 acres.

John and Elizabeth moved in 1791 to Patrick Co., Virginia. They had 10 children.

1. Cornelius Burnett 1780-1833, married Margret "Peggy" Turner and Mildred "Millie" Stone.
2. Jane "Jenny" Burnett 1782-1841, married James Hall.
3. Mary "Polly" Burnett 1783-Unk, married Elisha Packwood
4. Crawford Burnett 1785-1845, married Lavinia May "Viney" Sharp. (both hanged, along with their son John, in Washington Co. Arkansas for the murder of Jonathan Selby)
5. Nancy Burnett 1787-Unk, married Rev. John Turner.
6. Elizabeth Burnett 1794-Unk, married Jesse Corn Jr..
7. Permelia Burnett 1795-1827, married Samuel Corn.
8. Judith Burnett 1797-Unk, married Shadrack Turner Jr..
9. John Burnett Jr. 1799-1842, married Mary Ann Prillaman.
10. Mahala Burnett 1806-Unk, married William "Bill" Ross.

John Burnett died in Patrick Co. Virginia in 1827, a wealthy man.

There is no record of this John Burnett serving in the American Revolution.

Located on a ridge on Road 618, on north side of Sycamore Creek, near home of Mrs. Irene M. Foley, and a mile west of Elamsville. Recorded 7/21/1978
There are probably a number of unmarked graves. Some of these graves are probably those of Burnetts, since this is near the Burnett Homeplace. PROVIDED BY MAREDIA APRIL 30, 2017.
