Obituary published in the Boston Herald, Boston, MA on Wednesday, June 29, 1932, on page 24: GEORGE S. BURTON, SWAMPSCOTT, DIES. Former Boston Merchant Was Descendant of Revolutionary War Hero. George S. Burton, retired Boston merchant, died in his Beach Bluff, Swampscott, home yesterday in his 82d year. He was born in Boston, Nov. 26, 1850 (sic), son of Hazen J. and Harriet (Smith) Burton, and was a descendant of John Burton of Salem, a captain in the revolutionary war. He was graduated from English high school with the class of 1869, and at which time he was awarded the Franklin medal. At the formation of the Second Unitarian Society in Brookline, he was made chairman of the credentials committee, and was for many years identified with the affairs of that society. During his residence in Swampscott, he took active part in the affairs of the community. He was one of the founders and a member of the Tedesco Country Club, of the Union League Club of New York and the Eastern Yacht Club, the New England Geneological Society, Society of Colonial Wars and the Sons of the American Resolution. Feb. 20, 1877, he married Frances Virginia Miller, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry F. Miller of Boston. She died April 18. He leaves a daughter, Ethel Miller (sic) Burton, who made her home with him; a son, Roger O. Burton of New York, and two grandchildren, Mrs. Clarence Chaffee and Wilton Burton of Bronxville, N.Y., and a brother, Hazen J. Burton of Minneapolis." ~ Thank you for the obit Mary M

It wasn't uncommon in the late 1800's, early 1900's to see a name change for the folks at Boston. There was a "legal" name change for George's dad. George was born George Williard, and the records started to reflect George Smith toward the latter part of his life. Where I can't find a legal name change, I am wondering if he was George Willard Smith Burton, this is very much a possibility. He was born George Williard, married as George Williard, and he is in the cemetery as George Smith Burton.
