Georgiann A. Ukena, 88, of Hiawatha, died Sunday afternoon, December 22, 2013, at Vintage Park Assisted Living Apartments in Hiawatha.

Georgiann was born October 27, 1925, in Horton, the youngest of three daughters born to George Wallace and Anna Dorothy Adams Alexander of Everest. She was educated at the Everest Rural High School and later received a bachelor of science degree in home economics/dietetics from Kansas State University at Manhattan, as well as other university subjects of education.

Georgiann married Wayne Hubert Ukena, May 25, 1946 at the Methodist Church at Everest. She continued her work in the Church as well as work in educational orders. A daughter, Nancy Jane, was born to this union. Georgiann continued to work in the community and teach grade schools in Everest, Horton, and Effingham. Libraries were a point of interest or a passion with Georgiann as she gave much service to them. They also made their home at Valley Falls [and] Forsythe, MO, before moving to Hiawatha.

Survivors include her husband Wayne of Vintage Park in Hiawatha; a daughter Nancy Keith of Effingham; two granddaughters: Natalie Keith Yardley and Alexandra Keith-Henry; two sisters-in-law: Beverly Bottiger of Lakeland, FL, Euna Vaye Brant of Topeka; and a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters: Dorothy Hoffman and Ruth Jeanette Biggs.
Last week, the sad news was received that Georgiann Ukena has passed away at her home in Hiawatha. Mrs. Ukena taught in USD 377 for many years and touched the lives of so many students and their families in our community in a very positive way. She was known and loved by many a former student and their parents as a caring and empathetic professional. A parent teacher conference with Mrs. Ukena was an uplifting and encouraging experience aimed at bringing forth the potential of the student in question.

The poem that appeared in her funeral program epitomized her philosophy to the T. I can see her beginning each day saying this:

God grant me wit and wisdom

Stand beside me through each day,

As I teach and guide my students,

And help them find their way.

Please give me strength and patience,

And help me do what's right,

To lead them by example,

Toward a future Sure and Bright

Thank you, Mrs. Ukena.
