Samuel Eugene Bolt, 80, of Oak Ridge passed away at the Methodist Medical Center on Thursday, April 19, 2007.

He was born Oct. 18, 1926, in Laurens, S.C., to Lucious and Helen Sullivan Bolt. Mr. Bolt graduated from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and the U.S. Army ROTC program. He also attended the University of Tennessee for post-graduate work.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and World War II and was the commanding officer in charge of the 867th Ordinance Explosive Disposal Reserve Unit in Oak Ridge. Mr. Bolt worked as a mechanical engineer at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, X-10. His work included participation in a lab project in Manheim, Germany, as well as the study for potential storage of nuclear waste in the Louisiana salt deposits. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and a current member of St. Clare's Episcopal Church in LaFollette.

He was the assistant scout master of Troop 128 at St. Stephen's and actively involved in numerous Boy Scout activities. Mr. Bolt was a member of the Oak Ridge Power Squadron, several bridge clubs, the '43 Club of Oak Ridge and Silver Tops.

Upon retirement, he proudly participated in volunteer programs for the Methodist Medical Center and the FISH program. He was an avid lover of nature and the great outdoors. He and his wife enjoyed traveling through out the world during their retirement.In addition to his parents, Mr. Bolt was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Bolt.

Survivors include his wife, Harriet Sturgis Bolt of Oak Ridge; two sons, Gordon Sullivan Bolt and his wife, Katherine, of Roswell, Ga.,, Richard Lee Bolt and his wife, Penny, of Davie, Fla.; a daughter, Priscilla Travis and husband, Randy, and granddaughter, Mackenzie Travis, all of Smyrna, Tenn.; and a sister-in-law, Carolyn Bolt of Tuscaloosa, Ala.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at 2 p.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Craig Kallio officiating. The family will receive friends at a reception at the church following the service. The burial will take place at Pioneer Whitaker Cemetery in Sarasota, Fla., at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Clare's Episcopal Church, c/o Kemper Coker, P.O. Box 134, Jacksboro, TN 37757 or to S.A.R.G. (Shelter Animals Rescue Group), c/o Shirley Auble, 124 Newell Lane, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.Weatherford Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
