Sarah was the daughter of Colonel Kemp Gatewood and his wife Barbara. She became the second wife of Muscoe Garnett on 5 September 1838. He had two young sons from his first marriage. Frank, David, and Kemp all died in 1862. Then all five of Sarah's children had died. Colonel Henry Thomas Garnett wrote; "she died broken-hearted."
