Viola was born in Texas where she met and married Jacob Shapiro, who served in World War I, and was later stationed there. They had two daughters in Abilene, Texas during World War II. After WWII, the family moved to El Paso, TX where Viola taught public school and Jacob retired as a Radio Operator for the Civil Aeronautical Administration.
Survivors include her daughters, Rosemary Frances Shapiro Petzold and Leisa L. Shapiro Barnett.
