GRACE, Idaho - Barbara Ann Hogan Olsen, 77, passed away Sept. 27, 2001, while at the home of a daughter in Mendon, Utah. Barbara was born Dec. 14, 1923, to Ira H. and Harriet (Hattie) Williams Hogan. She was the youngest in the family with five older brothers. She lived all of her life in Gem Valley, attending schools in Thatcher, Idaho.
She married Ariel Baird Olsen in Salt Lake City. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. Ariel and Barbara made their home on the Olsen farm, west of Grace. They had one daughter, Annetta. Sadness came early to Barbara when after only two and a half years of marriage, Ariel died in a farm accident.
Barbara married Ariels' brother, Alexander John Olsen, who was a widower raising two boys, Rao and George. From this came our family, Pamela, Joleen and Patty. Alex and Barbara brought together the Olsen farms, where they lived and raised their children until they sold the farm and moved into Grace.
Barbara worked hard all her life, not only working on the farm, but completing the LPN course and becoming a nurse at the Caribou Memorial Hospital. After retiring from nursing, she enjoyed traveling with a tour group of friends from the area. She also becomes a lover of family history and genealogy. She became very competent on the computer and spent many hours doing genealogy, using the Internet and emailing. She still wanted to learn more, even when she became ill, to get to the computer. Service was the theme of her life, giving service to her family, friends and neighbors. Through the years she served in many positions in the LDS Church. In 60 years she moved three times and never left the boundaries of the Grace 2nd Ward. She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.
She is survived by one son and three daughters; George and Jolene Olsen, Aurora, Colo., Annetta and Wayne Andersen, Mendon, Utah, Joleen Rowberry, Spokane, Wash., Patty and Dana Silvers, Murtaugh, Idaho; 14 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Ariel and Alex; brothers, Vard, Donald, Roland, Ray and Lorin; two grandsons, Brian and Richard; and one son, Rao.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon on Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at the Grace LDS Stake Center with Bishop Charles Titcomb officiating. Burial will be in the Grace Cemetery. Services are under the direction of the Sims Funeral Home.
