∼Educator: He graduated from Phillips Academy and Dartmouth College before teaching and holding principalships at various public and private schools in New England. He was a popular teacher in Salem from 1823-1856 and 1860-1867. Salem's Carlton Elementary School is named for him. He had previously married Margaretta Clagget and Louisa A. Bartlett.
