He was born in San Augustine County, Texas, December 23, 1917, to Edgar Garrett and Viola Nash. He was raised by his grandmother, Mae Etta Nash. He was married to Virginia Roberts Garrett for 60 years until her demise on April 22, 1999.
Mr. Garrett was a school bus driver for Broaddus Independent School District for 40 years. After retirement, he devoted his time to cutting timber, growing vegetables and watermelons, raising cows and harvesting hay. He loved to hunt if he could find a good hunting dog, which was very seldom. In his early years, he was known as "Cola' and a great baseball pitcher, which he later coached his son, Tommy to win a trophy for being a winning pitcher in his tournament.
Mr. Garrett is survived by his children, Jeanne McCauley, Peggy and husband Quincy Bray, Claude and wife Cindy Garrett, Tommy and wife Katherine Garrett; grandchildren, Dwayne and Tamera, Danielle and Whitney Lyn; great grandchildren, Victoria Rae and DeeJay; two sisters, Hazel Brown and Rose Garrett; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by brother, T.G. Nash; sons, Earnest Ray and Waymon Glen Garrett and grandson, Marcus.
