Acey R. Ellingson, 90, New Effington, SD passed away Sunday, December 8, 2013 at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND.
Funeral services will be Thursday, December 12, at 2:00 pm at Faith Lutheran Church in New Effington with Rev. Tryphine Olson Schruba officiating. Music will be provided by organist Debra Bredvik and vocalist Kara Hansen.
Burial will be in the Garden of Rest Cemetery, New Effington. Military honors will be provided by the Read Veflin American Legion Post 180 of New Effington. Pallbearers will be Butch Leen, Kent Frerichs, Brad Ellingson, Kim Kempton, Orace Gunnarson and Mike Ceroll.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt. Visitation will continue Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Acey Roland Ellingson was born June 6, 1923 on the family homestead in Harmon Township, Roberts Country, SD. He was the fourth child born to Bert and Esther (Stanley) Ellingson. Acey grew up on the farm eight miles south of Rosholt. He attended country school and graduated from Rosholt High School in 1941.
On June 3, 1946, Acey enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea. He was honorably discharged November 4, 1947. He earned the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal Japan for his service.
On December 24, 1948 Acey married Marlys Struck at the Struck family farm. Together they farmed in Victor Township. In the fall of 1982, Acey and Marlys moved into New Effington. Acey served as the church custodian for over twenty years and worked for Green Thumb in Sisseton. He was also instrumental in establishing the New Effington Meals on Wheels. Marlys passed away October 21, 2008.
Acey was a member of the New Effington American Legion and served on the New Effington museum committee. He enjoyed square dancing, playing cards and keeping his yard immaculate. He especially loved spending time with his family.
Survivors include four children: Eileen (Steve) Parkhurst of Rosholt; Terry Ellingson of New Effington; Jon Ellingson of Coon Rapids, MN and Janel Ellingson of Aberdeen, SD; six grandchildren: Stacey (Steven) Meyer of Caledonia, MN; Kasey (Math) Brandenburger of New Effington; Beret (Rich) Ohm of Watertown, SD; Jona (Mark) Ohm of Oacoma, SD; Richie Ellingson of Shoreview, MN and Adam Ellingson of Arden Hills, MN; nine great-grandchildren; sisters: Leorna Williams of Las Vegas, NV; Mavis (Darwin) Hentz of Sun City West, AZ; Mardell Bonfiglio of Old Bridge, NJ and Marlene (Clarence) Antonsen of Mineola, TX; brother, Darrel (Jean) Ellingson of Cedar Creek, UT; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Charles (Ardyce) Struck of New Effington; Iola Struck of Richfield, MN; Shirley Conway of Willmar, MN; Dorothea Struck of New Effington; RuthAnn (Orvin) Ulstad of Ramsey, MN; Orlyn (Jan) Struck of Alexandria, MN, Larry (Kathy) Struck of Dennison, IA and Ron (Sue) Struck of Rosholt.
Acey was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marlys; brothers: Bertram, LeRoy and infant Duane; brothers-in-law: Don Struck, Jim Conway and Bill Williams; and sisters-in-law, Anne Ellingson and Nilda Ellingson.
