Son of Walenty and Josephine Zalewski, and married Mildred Loe on Jan. 12, 1944, in Washington, D.C.


Chester Charles Zalewski was born April 3, 1919, in Poland to Walenty and Josephine Zalewski. He immigrated to the United States with his family, when he was seven. He later became a naturalized citizen. He married Mildred Loe on January 12, 1944, at Bowling Field Chapel in Washington, D.C. They met at Arlington National Cemetery. Sergeant Zalewski was stationed there while serving in the Army Air Force. Mildred was working for the War Department. Chester was later stationed in Guam. After he was discharged from the military, they made their home in East Moline, Illinois.

Chester worked for 32 years at International Harvester Works in East Moline, where he was an active member of UAW Local 1304. He mentored many co-workers and took great pride in his work; he retired in 1980. Chester’s community activities included serving as president of the East Moline chapter of AARP and being a member of the East Moline City Advisory Council, the HUD Advisory Board, and the American Legion. He was active in the Illowa Council of Boy Scouts for 25 years, serving as a troop leader at Wells School and as a District Commissioner. In addition, he was a member of the Rock Island Senior Council, holding several offices including vice president and president.

Chester’s hobbies included gardening and wood working. He helped feed the neighborhood with the vegetables from his garden and won numerous awards for his prize Dahlias. He was a charter member of Christ the King Church in Moline, Illinois, where he took great pride in caring for all the flower beds on the church grounds. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Chester died March 31, 2011, following a brief period of declining health. Survivors include his two children and their spouses, two grandsons, three great-grandchildren, one sister, one brother, and one sister in-law. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mildred; his sister, Stella Myszkowski and her husband, Stanley; and a brother-in-law, Bob Laha.

Funeral services were held at Christ the King Catholic Church in Moline, Illinois. Burial was at Moline Memorial Park, where the East Moline American Legion Post 227 conducted military honors.
