Alexander was born a slave in North Carolina to slave parents. During the Civil War, Alexander went to Tennessee; while there he met members of the 12th Wisc Regiment. With Samuel Golden and other former slaves, he came to Prescott with the returning soldiers.
Alexander was a part time preacher and for years was in charge of 'Brown's Chapel' in Hastings, an African Methodist Church. Later he joined the Methodist Church of Prescott from which his funeral was held.
Alexander was an exceptionally good speaker; it was said he could move the audience to tears when recounting slavery days. (Contributed by L. Mueller)
