John Iland King, 88, of Greeneville, passed away on Friday, December 6, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family.
Mr. King was a native of Greene County, a son of the late Rufus and Elsie King. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy on the USS Melvin. He was an active member of Greeneville Church of Christ. Mr. King retired from Laughlin Hospital after 36 years of dedicated service. He loved the Lord and loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed war movies, westerns and gardening, especially enjoyed growing tomatoes. Survivors include his wife of 67 years: Anna Lee Shipley King; two sons and one daughter-in-law: Johnny Lee and Gail King of Knoxville, TN, and Ronnie C. King of Greeneville, TN; step-daughter: Melba Shipley Grindstaff and her husband, Clyde, of Johnson City; two grandsons: Johnathon Lee King of Nashville, TN, and Wesley Grindstaff of Asheville, NC; one granddaughter: Leeisa G. Casey and her husband, Bobby, of Johnson City, TN; one great-grandson: Bentley K. Casey of Johnson City, TN; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by sisters: Lena King, Katrina King, Fonda Roberts, Marguerite Wills, and Charmie Edens; brother: Rufus King, Jr.
The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. on Monday at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the Doughty-Stevens Chapel. Minister Shane Hoover and Elder Gordon Ricketts will officiate.
Interment will follow in Andrew Johnson National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Greene County Honor Guard and the U.S. Navy military honors team.
Pallbearers will be Johnathan King, Wesley Grindstaff, Bobby Casey, Mitchell Weaver, Cecil Ellenburg, Mike McElroy, and Noah Champion
