EMPORIA -- Donald Bernard Ast, 78, Emporia, died Monday, March 10, 2003, at a Topeka hospital.

Mr. Ast was director of plant and materials at St. Mary's Hospital in Emporia for 36 years before retiring in 1989. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was born July 25, 1924, in Mount Hope, to Michael V. and Clotilda Reichenberger Ast.

Mr. Ast was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Ball-McColm Post No. 5 of the American Legion and Lowry-Funston Post No. 1980 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He married Margaret E. Herrick on April 20, 1974, in Emporia. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Donald Lee Ast, Parsons; five daughters, Teresa L. Vogel and Debra E. Michaels, both of Salina, Rebecca S. Smith, Kansas City, Mo., Tammy J. Goodell, Emporia, and Kathleen J. Tobin Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, Omer Ast, Kansas City, Kan.; a sister, Wilma Jean Black, Emporia; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Ast was preceded in death by a son, Steven Ast, and two stepsons, John Owen Herrick and Michael Dan Herrick.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emporia. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia.

Contributions may be made to the Donald Bernard Ast Memorial Fund to be designated later and sent in care of the funeral home.
