Jessie Dair Swanson Wagner passed away Friday, December 6, 2013 in a Clay County care center. She was born to John and Iowa Swanson on August 6, 1920 in Hayesville. She had three sisters, Carrie, Pearl, and Dorothy, and one brother, Gwen. Dair was valedictorian of her Hayesville high school graduating class in 1938 and then she attended college in Young Harris, GA.
Dair traveled to Knoxville, TN to join the United States Navy on November 11, 1943. She entered boot camp at Hunter College in New York City and later trained at Yeoman school in Stillwater, Oklahoma. She was stationed at Receiving Station Fire Control School in Washington, D.C. until February of 1946.
Working in civil service, she remained in the United States Naval Reserves. Dair was recalled to active duty in 1950 during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Charleston, SC. It was there she met Patrick James Wagner, a Navy serviceman, and they married on February 14, 1953.
In 1954, their daughter, Patricia Dair Wagner was born in Charleston. After Dair's discharge from the Navy in 1955, the family moved to Detroit where her husband's family lived. Their son, Karl Stephen Wagner, was born there in 1957. In 1961, the family moved to Atlanta, GA where Dair worked for Housing and Urban Development (HUD) until retiring in 1981.
Dair volunteered at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Atlanta for 35 years. She was President of the Auxiliary at American Legion Post #1 in Atlanta for two years and was Commander of Post #1 in 1981. On August 23, 1993, Dair donated her "dress blues" uniform to the military museum in Chattanooga, TN.
Dair returned to live full time in Hayesville on August 1, 1999. She continued her volunteer work with the Hayesville Senior Center with Meals on Wheels. She was also a member of the Clay County Revitalization program and donated several items to the Hayesville Museum. Dair stayed active with the "Young at Heart" bowlers.
Dair was preceded in death by both her parents, her husband, Patrick James Wagner, and three sisters, and a brother.
Dair is survived by two children, Patt Wagner of Atlanta, and Karl Wagner of Marietta; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of the Ivie Funeral Home, Hayesville with Rev. Kirk Hatherly officiating. Interment will be in the Hayesville First United Methodist Cemetery.
