Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 1 p.m. for Roy H. Mohr, one of Forest Park's best known and most popular citizens, who died last Saturday at the age of 77. Immediate cause of death was reportedly a coronary failure, and It came, just seven days after the passing of his sister, Ethel Haeger of LaGrange Park.
Mr. Mohr, known to many as "Uncle Roy," was a tireless worker for civic and charitable causes and had no equal here as a fund raiser. A few of the beneficiaries of his activities include the American Legion, the Forest Lions Club, Oak Park Sertoma and the Orphans Automobile Day Association, for whom he raised hundreds of dollars annually by accepting individual donations of just one dollar from his friends.
Mr. Mohr was Proviso Township Assessor for 30 years and was never defeated in an election. He retired from that office in 1963 but continued for a time to serve as a Republican precinct captain here.
He was the son of the late Henry J. Mohr, who was the last village president of Harlem and its first mayor when it was renamed Forest Park. His son, Howard, now serves as Forest Park's mayor as well as Assistant Majority Leader in the Illinois Senate.
Mr. Mohr was associated with his father and his brother for many years in H. J. Mohr and Sons, a coal and building material firm. In 1954, he co-founded the firm now known as Mohr Oil Company from which he retired 12 years ago. He retained his office there, however, doing mostly organizational and charitable work and continuing his long established practice of sending dozens of greeting cards each week to his birthday and anniversary lists.
Mr. Mohr is survived by his wife Nellie (nee Moran), three sons, Howard, William and John, and a brother, Carl. He was the grandfather of 13 and great-grandfather of nine.
Today's services will be held in the Zimmerman and Son Chapel where Masonic services were held last night. Throngs of people from all walks of life have stopped to pay their respects, and one man was heard Monday evening to say, "Forest Park has lost a giant of a man."
