Bennie Avant O'Brien

Bennie Avant O'Brien, 72, of Texas City, died April 7,2000, at Mainland Center Hospital in Texas City, Texas.

He was born July 8, 1927, in Wichita Falls, Texas, to Hettie Mae and Ben O'Brien. Ben was raised in West Texas, attending school in Big Spring and Wink. After serving on PT Boats in the Pacific Theater during WWII, he went to college in Alabama. There he met and married Janet Sightler of Florala, Alabama. Then followed a period of service in the U.S. Air Force. In '1957, he joined the
M.W. Kellogg Co. and started a long career in crane and rigging operations. In 1966, he founded Domac Inc. in Texas City and added to that in 1988 by founding the Texas School of Cranes. He was an OSHA certified instructor and a member of the American Society of
Safety Engineers.

He was truly a remarkable man with a zest for life, a thirst for knowledge and a deep affection for the Masonic Order. He was raised a Master Mason in Dickinson Lodge No. 1324 and became Worshipful Master in 1990. He served as the Grand Chaplain, the Grand Lodge of Texas; Past Grand Master, the Grand Council of Texas; past commander of San Felipe de Austin No. 1; Red Cross of Constantine;
Knight York Cross of Honor; Scottish Rite 32 degree KCCH. He also served on the Texas Lodge of Research and the Quator Coronati England. He was an endowed member of
eight lodges in the state of Texas. At the time of his death, he was serving his brothers as the Grand King, Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Texas.

Leaving to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 53
years, Janet; daughter and sonin-law, Peggy and Jim Davenport of Dickinson; daughter Terri O'Brien of Texas City; son and daughter-in-law, Perry and Denise O'Brien of Texas City; grandchildren, Doug and Robin Davenport, Dixie and Wade Sholmire, Ben and Mariana Harbuck, Tye Harbuck, Caitiin O'Brien, Darcie O'Brien and Michael O'Brien; great-grandchildren; Jordan Davenport, T. J. Moore and Alexander Sholmire; and numerous nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his son Michael Ben O'Brien.

He leaves behind an extended family of Masonic Brethren across the state of Texas.

Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of the James Crowder Funeral Home in La Marque,5 Texas, with Pastor Alfred Deeds officiating. Burial will follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock, Texas with a Masonic graveside service under" the Auspices of the La Marque Masonic Lodge.

Pallbearers are Perry O'Brien, Tammy Gamble, Doug Davenport, Jim Davenport, John Schmidt and Ben Harbuck. Honorary pallbearers are Masonic Brethren Chester Neagle, Jim Rex, Howard Purkaple, Earl Holman, Roland Maddox and Gerald Simpson.
