Sarah Ann is the first wife of David Steadman CALDWELL.

Two of their sons were Henry C. CALDWELL and David Rollin. Two of their daughters were Susan Janette (Caldwell) CALDWELL and Laura Belle (Caldwell) ALLEN.

1858 was a terrible year for Sarah A. (Creager) CALDWELL: Her 20-month old son, David Rollin, died in January, 1858, I believe. GGGrandma Sarah died June 1st. 1859, probably from complications from the birth of Laura Belle (Caldwell) ALLEN in April. She had at least 10 children in those 16 years she was married to David Steadman Caldwell. Childbirth killed so many women and children back then.

I was shocked when we found this stone for it is just as legible as the day it was carved and it is just sandstone. Her stone and their son, David R. are standing but lots have been destroyed in the old cemetery by vandals. The old farmer there told me that there has not been a funeral in that cemetery since 1915.

ANCESTORS

If you could see your ancestors
All standing in a row,
Would you be proud of them?
Or don't you really know?
Strange discoveries are sometimes made,
In climbing the family tree
Occasionally one is found in line
Who shocks his progeny.
If you could see your ancestors
All standing in a row,
Perhaps there might be one or two
You wouldn't care to know
Now turn the question right about,
And take another view
When you shall meet your ancestors,
Will they be proud of you?
