He is also survived by his three granddaughters and (grandson-in-law); two great-grandchildren; brother, James F. Brownell. He was predeceased by his daughter, Dorothy M. Brownell. Robert W. Brownell, 86, one of the foremost golfers and administrators in the Middle Atlantic region, has died after a brief illness.
Mr. Brownell, who died Oct. 14 [13] in Kensington, won 11 District of Columbia amateur championships, including 10 in the mid-1950s, This came out to a 58-match winning streak, an unprecedented feat at the regional level in the U.S. In addition, he also won five Middle Atlantic Amateur tournaments, one Maryland State Amateur tournament and one Maryland Open.
Mr. Brownell was one of only three administrators to serve as president of the three area gold associations: D.C. (now Metropolitan), Maryland State and Maryland Atlantic.
