Elizabeth Rowland Humphreys was born in Ebensburg, Cambria County, Pennsylvania to John and Mary Rowland. She grew to womanhood in this community and on March 21, 1861 she married Thomas J. Humphreys. To this union eight children were born. The family farmed in Ebensburg, Pennsylvania and in 1868 moved to a farming community in Old Man's Creek, Johnson County, Iowa. However, in 1879 the family moved to Gage County, Nebraska where they homesteaded along with many other Welsh settlers. They became a well respected family and helped build the area into a large community. The family was very religious and was instrumental in establishing a church where all could worship. Elizabeth was a good wife and mother and well thought of in this Welsh community.
