Chico Record (Chico, California) 22 Oct 1929, Tuesday Page 6: C.M. Daily, Former Slave, Dies At Home. Born in slavery, years before the Emancipation Act, Cornelius M. Daily, 85, died Sunday night at his home, 4144 Seventh Street, after several months of illness. The distinction of having engaged in one line of business longer than any other Chicoan and the unique fact that he was the oldest barber in Chico and perhaps in California were other circumstances that made his life of notable interest.

The former slave was born in Palmyra, Mo., in 1844 as the property of the grandfather of the Shropshire Brothers, at one time holders of the Klondike addition to the city of Chico. Before he had reached an age of service he was set free by his masters. He came to California and located in Colusa in 1869. In 1872, he moved to Chico and took employment. After a year of barbering he then opened his own shop and continued his establishment until February 1927. During that time he shaved and trimmed hair for three generations of Chico residents.

He married Louise Bailey of Tehama in 1874. Soon after the founding of the African Methodist Church by Mrs. Annie E.K. Bidwell, he became affiliated with that denomination as trustee. He was one of the oldest members of North Star Lodge No. 8, Knights of Phythias.

He is survived by two sons, George of Chico and Harry T. Daily of Los Angeles; two daughters, Mrs. Annie Edwards and Mrs. Laura Balch of Chico; a brother, John Daily of Moline, Ill., and four grandchildren.

Funeral rites will be held this afternoon at 2:30 in the chapel of Bicknell & Moore. Rev. J.N. Cherry will officiate and North Star Lodge No. 8 will conduct the graveside services. Interment will be in Chico cemetery.
