Ima's mother, Sylvia, and Sylvia's six month old daughter, Ruth, were killed in a tornado that ripped through Marcus, Iowa when the family lived there, in June 1885. Ima and her father, Aaron, were severely injured, but recovered. For a while they lived with Aaron's parents on a farm near Washta, Iowa.
Later he remarried and life for Ima was very bleak and harsh, and eventually eleven step (half) brothers and sisters - some of whom used to visit our home (Lovella Ewoldt's parents) when I (Lovella) was very young and scarcely remember, except for some names.
Ima's father, Aaron, eventually left Washta, Iowa and "got lost". Ima finally traced him to Washington State and a horse ranch by way of some kind of program on very early radio - early 1920's. From then on, there was some correspondence with the people who operated the ranch and Ima always sent money for Christmas. Lovella Ewoldt continued to do so after Ima's death.
