Lillian "Irene" French Britts
Irene French Britts not only taught the ABCs as a third-grade teacher in Fruitland Park. For more than 23 years, she read prayers and passages from the Bible to children attending Sunday school. She died Thursday August 8, 1991 at home, following a long-term illness.For Mrs. Britts, each morning began with the Pledge of Allegiance, a patriotic or religious song and a prayer thanking God for a new day of learning. She considered many of her pupils 'adopted' members of her family. She lived at 605 S. 12th St. in Leesburg. She was born in War, W.Va., and moved to Leesburg from Tazewell, Va., in 1946. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Leesburg, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was a member of the Faith Sunday School class. As a member of the Home Outreach Ministry, she visited hospitals and nursing homes in Leesburg and Mount Dora. Mrs. Britts was a graduate of Concord College, Athens, W.Va., and a member of Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa and Alpha Sigma Tau sororities, the Order of The Eastern Star Chapter 84, the American Legion Auxiliary Chapter 52 and the Leesburg Woman's Club.She is survived by her husband, Roger Sr.; son, Roger Jr., Alexandria, Va.; daughters, Rebecca Conway, Orlando, Mayme Kain, Ocala; brother, Sherill French, Princeton, W.Va.; sister, Mary Faye Barnette, North Tazewell, Va.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.IB
