Mr. Maddox attended Mayfield High School then, after WWII, graduated from Ohio University in 1948 with a degree in journalism. He proudly served his country during the war as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force. He flew P-38's and P-47's in the Pacific Theatre. He was a highly decorated aviator receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross w/clusters and the Air Medal w/clusters among other commendations.
Mr. Maddox was a lifelong member of First Christian Church, "Disciples of Christ" in Mayfield where he served as a deacon and was active on many boards and committees. He was recruited by and worked for Ford Motor Company in Texas. He then came to work alongside his father in sales for the Merit Clothing Company in Mayfield. In 1962 he co-founded the private clothing company Bennett of New Haven where he served as Vice-President and working sales manager until the company was sold to Marx-Hass Company of St. Louis. He finished his career as a traveling sales manager with Marx-Hass and Biltwell corporations both of St.Louis.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sarah Emerson Maddox of Mayfield; one brother, J. K. Maddox of Ocala, Fl.; two sons, William E. (Billy) Maddox II (Cynthia) of Paducah and Gregory Emerson (Lisa) Maddox of Ft. Worth, Tx.; four grandchildren, Kelly Maddox (Robert) Walker of Louisville, Amanda Margaret Maddox of Los Angeles, Ca., Katherine Lanier Maddox and William Whitman Maddox of Ft. Worth, Tx.; and one great grandson, Benton Walker of Louisville.
He is preceded in death by his parents R.N. and Treva Maddox; and five brothers, Hal, Julian, George, Richard and Marvin Maddox.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at 1 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Mayfield with the Rev. Tom Wright and Rev. Randy Cook officiating. Interment will follow in the Highland Park Cemetery.
Friends may call after 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at First Christian Church in Mayfield.
