In early manhood he was employed on the river in propelling flat-bottom boats operating between Hartford and Brattleboro. Extra men were required to run the boats in the swift-water section above Greenfield, Mass., and he served in that capacity and also went to Hartford, probably, at some periods. These river men employed white ash poles with heavy spikes in the end to man the boats. Jude, Zera K., Asa and Elijah Fairman are listed in Heminway's Vermont Historical Gazetteer(Vol. V, Page 305) as "swift-water men" from 1810 on, before the flat-bottom boats gave way to steamboats.
On Jan 31, 1811 in Vernon, VT he married Sally Luce, daughter of Ebenezer and Polly Luce.
Their children were Benjamin, Mary, Elvira, Abigail, Lucina, Haven Willard, George, Lucina, and William.
