WELLONS Captain Alfred G. Wellons, Jr. USN/RET, 83, passed away on October 6, 2008 due to a brief illness. A.G., as he was called by friends and family, retired from the Navy in 1972. He enlisted in the Navy in 1943: entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1944. He graduated in 1947, the last of the war time three year classes. After 2 years at sea, he went to flight training and was designated a Naval Aviator in 1950. He was one of the lucky few Naval Aviators who were assigned to fighter squadrons his whole career. Some of his assignments were: YF-14 Flying F4U Corsairs: VFAW-3 Flying F4D's: Skipper of VF-111 Flying F8V-ZN Crusaders. He also served as Fighter Training Officer for the Pacific Fleet. He was preceded in death by his first wife Betty and his parents. Surviving are his wife Eleanor, his son Glen Alan and wife Mamie, son Grady Lee and wife Andrea. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. After cremation his ashes will be spread at sea according to the Navy's "Return to Sea" burial program. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Fallen Soldiers' Relief Fund, P.O. Box 3968, Gaithersburg, MD 20885 or call (866) 962-FSRF.
