BELLEVILLE - William H. Stroup passed away peacefully at 5:20 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012, at Valley View Haven, in Belleville, after an extended illness .Born May 20, 1938, he was a son of the late Lawrence A. Stroup Sr. and Vera Mae (Shultz) Stroup. He married the former Elizabeth Harris on Nov. 27, 1963.Along with his wife, he is survived by: two children, Vera Lynne Stroup- Reintier and husband, Marco, of Topeka, Kan., and Joseph Stroup and wife, Kristin, of Millerstown; and seven grandchildren, Jaret Stroup, Joseph Rentier, Jakob Rentier, Mya Grace Rentier, Kenedy Stroup, Ethan Rentier and Jordan Stroup.Bill also was preceded in death by three siblings, Mary M. Stroup, John D. Stroup Sr. and Lawrence A Stroup Jr.After graduating from Menno-Union High School in 1956, Bill served in the U.S. Navy and he was stationed in Japan and Formosa. He graduated from the University of South Flordia in 1970 and taught school in Sarasota, Fla. and at the Seventh Ward School, in Mifflin County, for a total of 29 years.He was active in the Belleville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5935 and served as post commander, secretary-treasurer, scholarship chairman and was director of the Memorial Day Parade for a number of years.He also served on the Union Township Municipal Authority Board for 14 years and was a charter member of Duster's Landing Camp.A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, at the Valley View Haven Chapel, with the Rev. Gerald Peachey officiating.In lieu of flowers, and should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the VFW Scholarship Fund, 4138 E Main St, Belleville, PA 17004.Arrangements are under the care of Henderson Funeral Home, 3813 W. Main St., Belleville.
