Lucy's Life

Lucy, age 17, is first recorded on 20 Jun 1900 living on her parent's South River, Warren County, VA, farm home, with her 11 year old brother, Charles A. Alger. Her 72 year old father, Elias, is a farmer. Her 48 year old mother, Mary Frances, reports that she has 9 living children out of 15 born to her during their 34 year marriage. Lucy and Charles are the youngest and last to live in their home.

A year and a half later we find Lucy is in Westmoreland County, PA. Three of her elder siblings, John, Thomas and Rebecca, had all gotten married and established residency there. This is also where Lucy married Gordon McIntyre on Christmas Day, 1901.

On 2 Jan 1920, Gordon and Lucy are residing in Beaver Creek, Washington County, MD. They have 4 children in the home: John, (who is incorrectly documented as George), Mamie, James and Marie (who is mentioned by her middle name of Molly). Gordon supports the family working as a laborer in a furniture factory.

On 8 May 1930, Lucy is now widowed. She and her 5 year old son, Joseph, are lodging in the Hauvers, Frederick County, MD home of 67 year old farmer, Richard C. Toms. Lucy states she is a farm laborer.

Lucy next married John Asbury Lash Jr, a widower, some time in the mid-late 1930's. They are documented living alone together as husband and wife in South Huntingdon, Westmoreland County, PA on 4 Apr 1940. John is employed as a laborer for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) Project. Both report that they lived in rural Maryland five years earlier.

In Dec 1941 Lucy filed a delayed birth certificate with the state of Virginia for her son, John. In it she reveals that John was her third born child, but one of the previous two had passed away before John was born. The document was notarized in Westmoreland County, PA on 6 Dec 1941 and received by the Virginia State Registrar on 9 Dec 1941. I uploaded a copy of it on John's memorial.

On Sat, 17 Nov 1956, Lucy is widowed once more when John passed away of a sudden stroke. At some point thereafter she moves to New Jersey where two of her daughters, Minnie and Mamie, reside. 13 years after John's death, Lucy became ill. She passed away at the South Jersey Hospital on 10 Apr 1969 at 86 years of age and was laid to rest at Mount Bethel Cemetery, Plot A-48, in Garfield, Frederick County, MD.
