Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Navy Honors.

Mr. Abla passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at his home in Lawton, Oklahoma, surrounded by his family.

There will be a special viewing and visitation for family and friends on Monday, December 2, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Vernie was born on September 29, 1924 in Erick, Oklahoma to Robert Lewis and Sada Mae (Elms) Abla. Vernie served in the United States Navy from June 30, 1943 until December 18, 1945. He served during WWII and was awarded many medals and awards including the Purple Heart, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asia/Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal. After the war, he owned and operated the Hawk Movie Theater in Erick, Oklahoma. He married Flossie Marie Robison April 19, 1942 in Cheyenne, Oklahoma. In 1947, he moved the family to Lawton to attend Cameron College where he was named captain of the football team. He graduated from Cameron College in 1967. He managed the Fort Sill Officer's Club Liquor Store from 1951 until 1959 and the SW Liquor Wholesale Company from 1959 to 1961. In 1961, he opened his own liquor store, Cache Road Package Store, selling it in 1974 due to his daughter's illness. He was a manager for Curtis Industries until 1985 and then opened Vernie's Liquor Store and later Big Jack's Liquor Store, retiring in 2005. His beloved wife, of 71 years, Flossie passed away on June 26, 2013.

Mr. Abla enjoyed playing table games that included a nightly game of dominoes with his wife. He was a Dallas Cowboy's fan, and also liked the New York Yankees and was an Oklahoma Sooner fan.

He is survived by his children and their spouses, Vernie Wayne and Brigetta Abla, of Telford, Tennessee, Steve and Lynn Abla, of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, and Debra Son, of Duncan, Oklahoma; his brother in law, Cecil and Sandy Robison, of Sugar Land, Texas; his 3 granddaughters he and Flossie raised, Jennifer Carr, of Marlow, Oklahoma, Jacqueline Sutton, of Lawton, Oklahoma, and Kristi Sutton, of Elgin, Oklahoma; his grandchildren, Christopher Abla, Kelly Winters, Kimberly Abla, Jamie Abla, Stevie Abla II, Wendi Brousseau, Jeffrey Abla, Tonya Harris, Cody Son, and Brandi Ortiz; 28 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of loving friends.

Vernie was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 71 years, Flossie Marie Abla, son, Jackie Dee Abla, daughter, Donna Rae Sutton; and granddaughter, Tammy Machielle Abla; six brothers, Homer Abla, Roy Abla, Elmo Abla, Melvin Abla, Robert Carol Abla and Bobby Joe Abla; and one sister, Vesta Phillips.
