Paul's parents were Ira S. Auchampaugh and Estella Mallett. He had a sister Anna, who was also born of that marriage. Anna was born in 1898, and was likely named after Ira's first wife.

Paul also had two older half brothers Ira and Milo, born of Ira S. Auchampaugh's first marriage with Anna Zillah Merrihew. Anna died in 1896.
