Oscar B. Abbott enlisted as a Private in Company E of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on February 10, 1863, and joined the regiment at Falmouth, Virginia, on March 23, 1863. He was discharged at the expiration of his term of service on November 11, 1863, at Detroit, Michigan. Oscar then re-enlisted as a private in Company M of the Eleventh Michigan Cavalry on August 8, 1864, in Reading, Michigan. He was mustered into service on September 12, 1864, and joined the regiment in Lexington, Kentucky, on October 17, 1864. Oscar was discharged from service on June 16, 1864, at Knoxville, Tennessee.
