Theodore Peter Koikas, age 89, of Ludington, passed away Saturday, April 28th. Theodore was born in Scala, Greece in 1912 and he came to the United States in 1921 at the age of 9.

He, with his father, Peter, and his mother, Katherine, and sisters, Pauline, Helen and Jennie, operated several restaurants in the Chicago area. He came to Ludington in 1926 where he opened the original Hamlin Cafe at the South Bayou of Hamlin Lake. He then brought the business to downtown Ludington, the name was changed to the old Hamlin Restaurant, where it is still owned and operated by his cousins, the Papadakoses. After selling Old Hamlin to his cousins, he built and opened the Koikas Colonial Gift Shop and the Downtown Deli on the corner of North Rath and Ludington Avenue. The Downtown Deli went on to become the Heritage Restaurant and eventually the Whistlestop Restaurant.

On Nov 27, 1942; Ted married his devoted wife, Betty Jane Haynor, who preceded him in death in 1975. Ted entered the United States Army at the beginning of World War 2, serving the duration of the war in the South Pacific.

On Oct 22, 1977; he married Marguerite Rudysill in Kentucky. She preceded him in death in 1992.

Ted actively promoted many civic activities throughout the Ludington area. He was a life member of the Ludington Elks Lodge #736. He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church.

In his business, his daily trademark was wearing a white shirt and bow tie. Many remember him singing opera in the kitchen as he cooked.

He is survived by one son, Peter Theodore (Robin) Koikas and one daughter, Helen Christine (Allan) Copenhaver; one sister Helen Koikas Abrahamson; three grandchildren, Aimee Copenhaver Zweigle, Allan (Melissa) Copenhaver and Benjamin L Copenhaver. He has two great grandchildren, Zachary and Ian Zweigle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Katherine Koikas and his wives, Betty Jane and Marguerite Koikas; two sisters, Pauline Koikas Spanos Bernotos and Jennie Koikas Tillman.

Services for Theodore Peter Koikas are Wednesday, May 2 at 11 p.m at the Dorrell Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday May 1 from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m.

Arrangements are by the Dorrell Funeral Home. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Hospice of Michigan in Mason County or the American Cancer Society with envelopes available at the funeral home.
