Petra Nellie Vandenakker Johnson, 98, passed away Saturday, Oct. 4, 1997, in Bountiful, Utah. She was born Aug. 9 1899 in Smithfield, Utah, the daughter of Alberdiean Waaseur and Arie Kryn Vandenakker.

She was the oldest of eight brothers and sisters. She moved to Grace on Feb. 3 1902 at the age of 3, into a new one-room home four miles west of Grace and lived in Grace all of her life. Nellie married Leo N. Johnson, Aug 13, 1919.

She was the editor for the Grace newspaper for 62 years, corresponding for the Salt Lake Tribune and Idaho State Journal. She owned and operated a beauty shop and contributed to the social, business and cultural life in Grace. She received many honors throughout her life and was an active member of the LDS Church and served in many capacities.

She is survived by her three children, Katherine (M.J.) Eschler, Dale Johnson and Lapriel (Richard) Allred; 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one grandson, Douglas Eschler; daughter-in-law, Gloria Johnson; and seven brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 10 at 1 PM, at the Grace LDS Ward Chapel. Interment is in the Grace Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are by the Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary.
