Lawrence lived in a lighthouse, growing up with 3 sisters. His sister Edna wrote this about him, "Lawrence was a blue-eyed blond with a dimple on his chin. We always said he was adopted because he was the best looking one of the bunch. He was the best brother any girl ever had. He only lived long enough to see one of his grandchildren. He had at least 28 grandchildren and great grandchildren at my last count." written in 1987.

Lawrie joined the US Coast Guard in 1941 and was Chief Petty Officer at the Duluth Lifeboat Station. He was widely known in Twin Ports marine circles and had participated in many rescues during his 10 years of service in Duluth. He recently applied for retirement, after serving 26 years with the Coast Guard, U.S. Lighthouse service and served in the Army.

He was married twice and had 3 children.
