On May 5 the 3d Amtrak Battalion CP (Command Post) near Marble Mountain in the Hoa Vang District of Quang Nam Province came under a co-ordinated enemy mortar and ground attack. After a barrage of mortar fire sappers breached the perimeter and began firing RPG's (Rocket Propelled Grenades) and throwing satchel charges destroying bunkers and damaging vehicles in the compound. Reaction forces swept thought the CP and fought off the attackers. Two Marines were killed in action and twenty one men were wounded.
One of the casualties was Cpl Rappold Jr. severely wounded during the battle he was evacuated to the NSA Station Hospital and then transferred to the Booke Army General Hospital at Ft. Sam Houston in Texas where he died as a result of complications from the severe burns he had received.
