Richard John Porter, 72, of Lyons, died Oct. 12, 2010, at Portland Veterans Hospital.

A service was held Oct. 15, in Lyons, with Pastor Calvin Bontrager of Lebanon officiating.

He was born Jan. 21, 1938, in Mahama and except for his time in the military, lived his entire life in the Willamette Valley.

He entered the U.S. Army on Sept. 15, 1956, as an Armor Crewman on the Patton Tank during the Korean War.

Mr. Porter was honorably discharged on Sept. 17, 1959.

He married Vonda Lee on March 19, 1960, in Stayton.

He was a carpenter for many years until starting his own company, D-2 Construction. Later he drove truck and started a trucking company, Rich Porter Trucking.

Mr. Porter and his wife moved to Lyons about 20 years ago and worked on the land they lived on.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge of Mill City, the VFW of Stayton and the Eagles in Salem.

He is survived by his wife Vonda Lee Porter of Lyons; sons and daughters-in-law Jerry and Pauline Porter and Johnpaul and Tiffany Porter, all of Stayton; daughters and sons-in-law Corrinne and Steve Poole of Lebanon, Colleen and Wayne Purvis of Salem and Christie and Tom Helman of Puyallup, Wash.; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
