Gideon served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

Between 1776 AND 1779 Eighth Pennsylvania Regiment, American Revolution

: He enlisted in August 1776 under Captain Wilson who soon was promoted to Lt Colonel. Gideon marched to Kittanning where he joined his regiment, the Eighth Pennsylvania under Col E. McKay. They marched from there over the mountains, going to Philadelphia, experiencing much hardship and exposure, then to Bordertown, NJ, joining the main Army in the spring of 1777, at Quibbletown. They went to Bound Brook where they made a rapid march across the Delaware and went into winter quarters at Valley Forge until the spring of 1778. During the harvest time that year, they started westward, stopping at Carlisle, where they were ordered up the Susquehanna to protect the people about Wyoming and Northumberland, then marched back to Pittsburg. After Gideon got back to his home on Whitely Creek, he became an Ensign in Captain John Guthery's Company, First Battalion, Washington Co., PA Militia and later a Captain in the Frontier Rangers. He saw much service in the eight years of the war; on 8 May 1833 he received a pension. [4]
