James Truman Shaw was born in Almont Michigan to David Ripley Shaw son of Truman and Nancy (Fay) Shaw and Harriet (Dewey) Shaw. His pioneer family moved from Vermont to New York and finally to the Michigan territory and bought land near the Belle River. The Shaw family, along with others, started Belle Arbor, Michigan, a little community that died away but was near Almont, Michigan. James Truman Shaw's grandmother and grandfather are buried in the Webster Cemetery in Michigan as well as his great grandparents John and Tryphena (Bingham)Shaw.

Member Detroit Naval Reserves at its organization (resigned). Republican, Presbyterian, Member Delta Kappa Epsilon. Clubs: Detroit Athletic, Detroit Boat, Country, Detroit Automobile.
