Newport Marine Is Killed In South Pacific Fighting; Covington Man Is Wounded.
Two Northern Kentucky Marines were listed as casualties yesterday. One was killed somewhere in the South Pacific area and the other was wounded in the fighting on Saipan.
Cpl. Frank Benning, Jr, 20 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank G. Benning, 119 Chesapeake Ave, Newport, was killed in action when serving with the Marines in the South Pacific area, his parents learned yesterday.
The Navy Department telegram did not say where or when Corporal Benning was killed.
A former Newport High School student, Corporal Benning was employed at the Kirk and Bloom Company, Cincinnati, before he entered the Marine Corps in March, 1943. He had been overseas since April.
Besides his parents, he is survived by four sisters.
