Calvin Elwood Phelps, 80, of Mt. Airy passed away peacefully in his home Tuesday, November 19, 2013 surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Virginia Louise Phelps.

Calvin was born November 22, 1932 in Dayton, MD to the late Dorothy K. and George Elwood Phelps.

He is survived by his three children, Gregory C. Phelps and wife Patricia of New Market, Carolyn A. Best and husband Larry of Jefferson, and Linda K. Hiepler and husband Marshall of Mt. Airy.

Calvin was a dedicated employee of C & P Telephone then Bell Atlantic for 35 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving as a jet engine mechanic. He also spent 20 years working with Greg and Trish at Mt. Airy Ace Hardware. Always willing to lend a hand, he made many friends during his lifetime. He loved working with his hands, anything inside or out. He enjoyed his backyard pond, fishing, traveling with Virgina, the Orioles and Ravens, and most of all spending time with his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family. He was a loving father and husband.

In addition to his wife and children he is survived by grandchildren Michael Phelps, Andrew Phelps, Rebecca Wilmoth and husband Dave, Thomas Best, Daniel Best, Sarah Best, Tyler Hanan, Katie Hanan and Shawn Hanan, great grandchildren Bradley, Brandon, and Dominic Rossi Phelps, step grandchildren Charles Kramer III and Lauren Cummings, and brother-in-law Rich Fleishman and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Lucile Grimes, Janet Deller and Gloria Fleishman.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM at Friendship Baptist Church, 1391 Sykesville Rd., Sykesville. Interment in Mt. View Cemetery, Marriottsville.

Friends may call at the Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8pm.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Frederick County.
