Verda I. Birkey, 88, of 303 West North St, Bremen, died Monday July 17, 1989 at Community Hospital after an illness. Mrs. Birkey was born 7/20/1900 in Wakarusa, IN to Arron and Elizabeth Smeltzer. She and her husband had owned Birkey Hatchery in Bremen and she had been part owner, of Tot 'n Teen Togs of Bremen. She was married 11/25/1919 in Nappanee to G.A. "Gip" Birkey who preceeded her in death on June 1, 1975. She was a Bremen area resident most of her life and was a life member of the Bremen Church of the Brethren where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was also first president of the Community Hospital of Bremen Auxiliary.

Surviving are her six children: Betty (Mrs. Harry Shoup), Glennis (Mrs. Philip Reidenbach), Carol (Mrs. Tom Boyer) all of Bremen, Darlene (Mrs. David Byler) of Hickory, NC, Jane (Mrs. Richard Hostetler) of New Castle, IN and Robert Birkey of Plymouth; 22 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren

Services were held Thursday July 20 at the Bremen Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Robert W. Dell officiating.
