Anita Brownlee Platte, 102, of Indianapolis, passed away quietly on Monday, November 18, 2013, at Miller's Merry Manor, Logansport. Born February 10, 1911 in Indianapolis, IN, she was the daughter of Harry Mango and Anna May (Miller) Brownlee.
Anita lived in the Indianapolis area her whole life graduating in 1927 from Arsenal Technical High School (Tech) and attending Butler University. At Butler she was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority where, in her words, she majored in "dancing and boys." One of those boys turned out to be her husband of 62 years, Robert Warner Platte.
Anita was a constant volunteer in the Irvington area and an active member of Irvington Presbyterian Church, Children's Guardian Home, Irvington Civic League and the "new" Community Hospital. As a member of the Hospital Auxiliary, she served for many years on the scholarship committee and financial aid for employees of the hospital.
Anita was proud of her lifetime Republican affiliation. She worked for every Indianapolis Republican Mayoral candidate since 1946. After she worked door to door for "Ike" in 1952 she found many women not voting. After Eisenhower was elected some of the volunteers from various sections of Indianapolis formed a group known as the "Republican Workshop." The purpose of this group was to acquaint more women with politics by leading discussion groups in neighborhoods eventually all over the state. She never had a political office, although asked to run. It would have slowed her down! Instead she volunteered at the precinct and ward level. Not only did she work for Republican Governors, she was proud to serve on Congressional campaigns for her friends Richard Lugar, Bill Ruckelshaus and Bill Bray. The Indiana Federation of Republican Women honored her in their "Tribute to Women". In her 90's, Anita still worked to register voters at her retirement home, American Village. She loved her family and her many women friends, including her PEO and church friends in Mooresville, where she lived for 25 years.
Surviving is her daughter, Jane Platte Miller (Gary) of Logansport; grandsons, Scott Miller (Lora) of Fort Wayne, and Brett Miller (Amy) of Fishers; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Emma and Drew of Fort Wayne, Kate Miller of Logansport, and Logan and Sydney Miller of Fishers. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband; and brother, Robert Brownlee.
