Patterson was the son of Thomas & Mary Lear Fletcher. In 1850, Patterson and his sisters, Elizabeth and Lucy, were living in Madison County in the home of his widowed mother. His brother, James, was living next door. P.H. Fletcher married Mary Jane Foster, the daughter of John & Jane Scott Foster, on March 5, 1856 in Lancaster, Kentucky. They made their home in Garrard County.

When the Civil War broke out, he and his brother, James, volunteered and were enlisted as SGTs in Co H of the 7th Ky Vol Cav, Union on September 29, 1862. They served with Co. H until the end of the war, and were mustered out on July 10, 1865 in Edgefield, Tennessee.

P.H. returned to Kentucky and was reunited with wife and children. Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher moved their large family to Edgar County, Illinois, prior to 1880. Their children were William, James, Robert, Moss Kerby (named for William Moss Kerby-2nd LT in Co H), Charles, Mary Jane, John, Sarah Elizabeth, George and Elisha Fletcher.
