Lewis R. Abbey, 87, of Hawarden died Friday, May 3, 1991, at the Hawarden hospital. Services were held Monday, May 6, at Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden, the Rev. Paul Hansen officiated. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Abbey was born April 13, 1904, in rural Hawarden, son of Elmer and Alice (McAninch) Abbey. He farmed with his parents and on his own following their deaths. He moved into Hawarden in 1987, and to the Hass Hillcrest Care Center in September 1988. He began teaching himself to play the violin at nine years of age and "fiddled" at Hawarden area dances. He was a member of the Associated Church, the Eagles, and a past member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Helen Abbey of Hawarden; and three nieces, Mrs. Bill (Lois Jean) Jacobs of Allison, Mrs. John (Janice) VanderFeen of Ireton, and Mrs. Marty (Janet) Jans of Yankton, SD.
