Mrs John A Rice, wife of the president of the Columbia Female College, died in this city today after a long illness. In her death no only are her husband and family bereaved, but a large circle of friends throughout the State will feel a personal loss. The Church and the College are deprived of a faithful, conscientious Christian worker.
Mrs Rice was born near Lynchburg, SC, April 16, 1862, and spent her early life there. She graduated from the Columbia Female College in June, 1884, and on April 13, 1887, she married the Rev Dr John A Rice. As a pastor's wife, she has lived at Kingstree, Darlington, Bennettsville and Columbia. In 1894, Dr Rice was made president of the College, and since that time her home has been here.
Mrs Rice's maiden name was Anna Belle Smith, and she is the last female member of her family. Mrs F S Koger, who died at the College in 1897, was her only sister, and her mother, Mrs M I Smith, died in the old home in June last. Three members of the family are living: Dr H Coke Smith, the Rev O B Smith and Mr E D Smith. She leaves, besides her husband, three little boys. Her remains will be carried to the family burying ground at St Luke's Church, Sumter, tomorrow.
