Son of Jonathan Starr and Mary Seabury. He early engaged in commerce with the West Indies, and commanded his own vessels. After his second marriage he retired from the sea and went into the mercantile business with his brother in New London. He was a successful merchant, an honored citizen, member of St. James church, and warden for many years. He was in the naval service of the U.S. during and after the war. He first married Mary Cook Jan 25, 1768 on Long Island. She died Sept 8, 1771 on Long Island. They had a son Jared, born Nov 1, 1768 on Long Island, a young man of great promise; was master of the brig Martha; sailed for England in 1793. The vessel was never heard from; supposed lost in a terrible gale in November of that year.
He then married Abigail Hazard Sept 11, 1780, the daughter of Dr. Robert Harzard and Elizabeth (Hazard) Hazard of South Kingston, R.I. Barbour vital records for New London, vol. 3 page 84
He then married third on March 5, 1805, Mrs. Esther Niles, sister of his second wife.

Jared and Abigail had the following children according to the vital records and "A history of the Starr family, of New England : from the ancestor, Dr. Comfort Starr, of Ashford, County of Kent, England who emigrated to Boston 1635" by Burgis Pratt Starr 1879 page 91, 92:
Mary Starr b. July 1, 1781 d. Sept 16, 1869 in Hartford. She married Col. Samuel Green Feb 4, 1803
Robert Hazard Starr b. Aug 11, 1782 went out as supercargo in one of his father's vessels to South America, and died of yellow fever at Demarara, Jan 21, 1808
Charles Starr b. Oct 28, 1783 went out as supercargo to the West Indies; established a business there, and died shortly after of yellow fever, at Havana, Cuba, July, 1817.
George b. June 14, 1787; was in business in New London until the financial troubles following the war of 1812, when he went south; was a cotton broker in Tuscaloosa, AL; then a wholesale grocer in Mobile; afterward in the cotton press business in New York, where he died Aug 4, 1869, unmarried.
