ABNER V.M. GEARHART, 72, for 26 years assistant postmaster in Hagerstown until his retirement in 1957, died at his home on Sunday evening. He was born at Reid, Maryland, son of Martin J. and Katherine (Welty) Gearhart. He had resided in Hagerstown for 50 years.

Gearhart was originally hired as a substitute letter carrier in July 1912 but was soon reclassified as a substitute clerk. When he first joined the postal service, rural mailmen were using horses and buggies.

Besides his wife, Mrs. Leda (Hanes) Gearhart he is survived by one daughter, Evelyn Lee, at home; son William V. Gearhart, Hagerstown; brother, Harry K. Gearhart, Waynesboro, Pa.; three grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at the Norment Funeral Home; interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. KATIE GEARHART, wife of Martin Gearhart, died very suddenly at her late home at Halfway, yesterday afternoon, after an illness of only one hour, aged 70 years 4 months and 28 days.

She was a member of the Church of the Brethren and besides her husband, she is survived by the following children: Mrs. Richard Dorsey and Mrs. John Snyder, Hagerstown; Edward and Harry, Waynesboro; Alvey, St. Louis; and Abner and Lemuel, this city.

The funeral was held at the Church of the Brethren, Broadfording; interment in cemetery adjoining.
