John came to Illinois with his parents in 1849. In 1862 he enlisted in the Union Army and served for three years during the Civil War. He married Mary King of Ligonier, Indiana on Apr. 1, 1869, in Champaign County, Illinois. They made their home for a number of years in Nebraska and Missouri, and came back to Illinois in 1904, settling in Normal, where they resided ever since. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Normal.
Mr. and Mrs. Zook were the parents of nine children, four of whom died in infancy.
