Thomas D. Atkins, 67, of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes.
Thomas D. Atkins was born to Donald and Ora (Schleuder) Atkins on Feb. 15, 1942 in New Ulm, Minn. He grew up and graduated from high school in Redwood Falls, Minn. He then attended St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn., graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He later attended South Dakota State University at Brookings, S.D., where he earned his Master's Degree.
On Sept. 3, 1964 Tom married Leona Zeug in Redwood Falls. He started his career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and they lived in a number of different towns in the Dakotas and Minnesota before settling in Detroit Lakes in 1977. He worked as an assistant manager at the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge and later at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife offices in Detroit Lakes, retiring in 1997.
On July 22, 2000 Tom married Linda Harvala in Osage. Tom was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed muskie fishing, duck hunting, trap shooting and golf. He also liked bowling and dancing. He loved to be with his family and friends and was known to be a very kind, gentle man.
Surviving Tom are his wife, Linda; two daughters, Amy (Brent) Jensen of Savage, Minn., and Colleen (Anthony Oliva) Atkins of Miami, Fla.; two sons, Nolan (Bridget) Atkins of Littleton, N.H., and Derrick (Lucinda) Atkins of Monticello, Minn.; one stepson, Richard (Stacy) Harvala Jr., of Moorhead; four stepdaughters, Angela Harvala-Asleson of Pelican Rapids, Diana Carlson of Fargo, Richelle (Scott) Monson of Perham and Sara (Brad) Moen of Brainerd; 27 grandchildren; one brother, John Atkins of Longmont, Colo.; as well as several nieces and nephews.
His parents and stepmother, Lucille Atkins, preceded Tom in death.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 17 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, with a prayer service at 6 p.m.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, July 18 at Holy Rosary Church in Detroit Lakes, with Monsignor Timothy McGee officiating.
Casket bearers will be Amy Jensen, Coleen Atkins, Nolan Atkins, Derrick Atkins, Chad Atkins, Gina Burgos and John Atkins. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.
